Golfing Girls Do Good

Pink golf balls were flying as the ladies teed off at the St George Golf Club for the 2012 Particularly Pink fun day to raise money for the local breast cancer association.

The nine hole, three ball Ambrose, sponsored by Vanity Fairways Brisbane and Boutique of Beauty St George, saw 36 experienced and not-so-experienced players team together for what was always going to be a gorgeous day in the sunshine.
After battling the course and some barbwire fences the women regrouped in the club house. The chatter raised the roof as they enjoyed a lovely lunch accompanied by pink champagne and the announcement of the winners.
In first place were St George Associates' President, Cheryl Brimblecome, who had teamed with her sister Julie Wilson and sister-in-law Melissa Southern. Runners Up were Judy Robertson, Blanche McNelley and Lola Cuffe who also won nearest the pin.
The Don Bradman Award for a cricket score effort on course went to Nindigully girls Bindy Mace, Wendy Betts and Sally Rigney.
Organiser of the day, Bindy Mace, then handed out the Bra-vo Awards for those who had war stories of tangling with trees, wildlife and each other.
The day of frivolity finished with big grins and cheers as it was revealed that $1,600 had been raised for the St George Branch of the Breast Cancer Association of Queensland.

The Downs and South Western District team of Natalie Hollis (8), Dana Beutel (9), Carmel Macdermott (9), Marie Cook (11), Lyn Case (12) and Sharon Weatherby (14) to represent the district at the Inter District Matchplay Tournament in Coolangatta was announced at the recent district championships in Warwick.

The team, together with Captain Margaret Adcock and joint Managers Aliecia Freeman and Adele Roberts was hoping to improve on their joint second placing from last year's event. Alas this was not to be as the players struggled with the fast, undulating greens. All team members tried hard and played their best during the week of competition.

The Gold Coast district hosted the event at the Coolangatta/Tweed Golf Course and this meant a rest day for everyone on Wednesday. This was fortunate for team member Lyn Case, as the day off allowed her to rest her wrist, which was injured on a tree root Monday afternoon.

During the week it was obvious that North Qld and Far North Qld teams were the ones to beat. Both teams had been unbeaten all week and were drawn to meet in the final matches on Friday.  These matches were going to be very close..........and the result was just that, a squared team result.  However Far North prevailed and won by 1½pts. Downs and South West finished in 5th place.

It was a great week for golf, renewing friendships and also witnessing the dedication of so many golfers from all districts, be it as a player, caddy, captain, manager or team supporter.

Next year will be hosted by North Qld District in Mackay.

For 128 women golfers from all over the district and beyond, Warwick Golf Club was the destination for the annual championships from 20 -22nd August.  The players had a chance to test out the course, which has a new and very interesting 18th green, on Monday in the Foursomes event. This event was won by current Toowoomba Golf Club Champion, Natalie Hollis, and partner Trudy Dunne with a 79gross.

The annual dinner gave everyone the chance to try another "Sand Bunker" or "Oh Dam", possibly a "Nineteenth Green" or a "Hole in One" - these of course were delectable cocktails made by the wonderful staff of the Condy Club at Warwick Golf Club. 

After the first round of the stroke championships, Hollis was in the lead, followed by Carmel Macdermott from Toowoomba, Marie Cook from Wallangara and local player, Samantha Hinze. Warwick, Vice- President, Margaret Adcock was also hot on their heels. The visitors all agreed that Sam would be the real threat after carding a course record of 76 earlier in the year.

Eventhough players didn't have to contend with sand greens this year, the grass greens were fairly slippery and approaches difficult.

Sam Hinze, contesting her first district championships, played solidly on Wednesday with two birdies on the 6th and 10th to storm home with a final round 78. Her two day gross score of 162 was three ahead on Adcock and Macdermott.

Bronze 1 Division was won by Toowoomba player, Bindi Bridle with a brilliant first round of 88 followed by 95. Bronze 2 winner was Barbara Mann from City Golf Club. Margaret Adcock won the District Veteran's Championship.
