The annual D&SW District Ladies Golf Handicap Matchplay Championships were held at Borneo Barracks on 16th & 17th April. Many clubs were represented from the district with players coming from as far as Goondiwindi and Chinchilla to participate in the event.
The first day results saw some players relegated to contest the plate and flight events after up to 36 holes of matchplay competition.
Rain and thick fog threatened day two of the event, but that did not deter the competitors who teed off at 8am with only 80 metres vision on the fairways and the possibility of another 36 holes to play.
Sunny skies in the afternoon made way for junior, Tyanna Cox(17), from Crow’s Nest to defeat the host club’s player Annie Hewitt(10) 5/4 in the Silver Division. Bronze 1 winner was Jenny Bradford from City who defeated fellow club member Liz Hudson 2/1. Toowoomba Golf Club member Joan Copeland defeated City player Anne Woodroffe to win Bronze 2, 1up.
St George has been through 3 floods in as many years and over the past 2yrs the golf course has suffered immensely. Last August St George golf course had been restored to a good playing condition for the Downs and South Western Ladies Golf Championhips. However in February again the flooding consumed the golf course causing more damage than previously, especially to the club house facilities. Once again the determination of the people in the west has seen the course return to a state that the members can enjoy.
The annual Mixed Veterans' Championship was held at Toowoomba Golf Club on 7th November. A good field enjoyed the lovely conditions of the Toowoomba Golf Course. Winners of the Gloria Victor Memorial Trophy were Robin Jasch & Pam White with a score of 83 Gross. Greg Yap & Barbara Mann secured the net prize with a wonderful score of 68 Net.
The Inter-District Matchplay Tournament playing for the Meg Nunn Salver was hosted by Central Qld District for 2011 and played at the Calliope Golf Club from 12th - 15th September. It was 29yrs since the inaugural event in Rockhampton.
The first day of the event ended with a loss and a squared match for the D&SW team. On Tuesday morning they bounced back with a strong win against Brisbane District. Two team losses on Wednesday didn't seem quite so bad when the end of day points had them in 3rd place behind Brisbane and Wide Bay.
The leaders were drawn to play each other on the final day and Downs were hoping for a big win against Gold Coast who were in last place. Match wins from Dana, Marie, Carmel & Sharon and a square from Margaret achieved the result they were hoping for. A tense wait for the leaders to finish their matches resulted in a tie for second place with Brisbane District. Wide Bay Burnett District were outright winners on 31pts.
