The two Downs and South Western District juniors playing for the Junior Jug in the Interdistrict Matchplay at Yeppoon are flying the team colours in between showers of rain, wet bunkers and blustering winds.
Paige Large from Gatton and Darcy Habgood from Toowoomba both off 10 are currently in Yeppoon for the event. After a slow start in the inclement conditions, they bounced back well on Tuesday with a team win. Darcy played to her handicap to win 2up and Paige came back strongly from 3 down after 11 holes to square her match. A rest day Wednesday worked in their favour as they gained another team win against the in form Gold Coast girls on Thursday morning and in the afternoon match against Brisbane & District, Darcy won 5/3 against a 6 handicapper and Paige staged a good comeback to again end up square against a 1 marker.
They play their last match tomorrow against North Qld. Anything could happen on the last day of competition. GOOD LUCK GIRLS!
Recently Goondiwindi Golf Club held their Open Day and Holden Scramble. What a great two days we had! We couldn’t have wished for better weather, the numbers for both days – 44 for the Holden Scramble and 55 for our Open day were fantastic and I have to thank everyone who contributed to these two days. We are extremely lucky that we have so many people willing to offer their support in all different ways to help make these days the success that they are. It takes a lot of time and effort to make sure that everything runs smoothly and a very big thank you must go to our Captain, Di Uebergang, for organising things so beautifully. The results from the Holden Scramble Day are: 1st: C Brimblecombe, K Webster, K Knight and our very own Joan Baty. 2nd: C Champion, P West, T Crank and D Armstrong. 3rd: Kerrie Pearlman, M Leitch, J Moses and P Jones.
The District held the Federation FourBall at Chinchilla this year on 4th June with 36 players nominating for the event. Winners of the event this year were Bethel Thompson & Coral Walton from Toowoomba City Club. Last year’s winners, Cheryl Francis and Jenny Bradford from City had to settle for Div I winners this year. Division 2 was won by Jenny Jenner & Gail Weedon also from City.
The annual D&SW District Ladies Golf Handicap Matchplay Championships were held at Borneo Barracks on 16th & 17th April. Many clubs were represented from the district with players coming from as far as Goondiwindi and Chinchilla to participate in the event.
The first day results saw some players relegated to contest the plate and flight events after up to 36 holes of matchplay competition.
Rain and thick fog threatened day two of the event, but that did not deter the competitors who teed off at 8am with only 80 metres vision on the fairways and the possibility of another 36 holes to play.
Sunny skies in the afternoon made way for junior, Tyanna Cox(17), from Crow’s Nest to defeat the host club’s player Annie Hewitt(10) 5/4 in the Silver Division. Bronze 1 winner was Jenny Bradford from City who defeated fellow club member Liz Hudson 2/1. Toowoomba Golf Club member Joan Copeland defeated City player Anne Woodroffe to win Bronze 2, 1up.
